Web Design Training
JeliNet is able to offer informal training, guidance and advice in both web design and audio production skills.
I can provide training at your office or home in an environment that you are familiar and comfortable with and on your own computers. I provide for relative beginners (please see below) & in particular individuals and employees who prefer one-on-one tuition. Much of what I offer is the imparting of real-world experience to give you more than a theoretical foundation to your skills development. My training is not rigidly set down in manuals and course notes, instead I offer specific advice and consultation in the area you have identified you need help with. I will explain a concept in any number of ways until you are happy you understand.
There is no risk of paying for a course that does not meet your needs. An initial phone call will determine what you need to know and whether I can help. If I can't offer the training you need I will say so. There is no commitment to fixed length courses or ongoing sessions. The need for further training is reviewed every lesson and often one session is enough to point you in the right direction.
Training sessions are usually 4 hours on any given day. I have found that it is hard to maintain efficient levels of concentration beyond this.
A note for absolute beginners
You should not underestimate the complexities of building a well-designed and well-assembled website. In many cases it would be far more expensive for me to train you from square one than for you to employ me to design your site. It is unlikely that you will go from stage one to a professional website in a short time, unless you have well-developed graphic design skills. Most web designers would agree that it takes at least a couple of years to develop the skills and gain the experience to produce professional sites.
My training is best suited to those with a wider interest in web design, in particular students and people needing to up-skill or move sideways in their careers, perhaps from IT Support of Graphic Design.
The Dreamweaver myth - a quick tip!
Many people purchase Dreamweaver on it's own with the view that they will be able to design a website. It's not quite that simple! I describe Dreamweaver not as a web design tool, but a web-assembly tool. The graphics and layout structure of websites are usually designed in other programs such as Fireworks, Photoshop, Illustrator, Freehand etc. Dreamweaver is then used to assemble images, sound, video, text, scripts, forms and other content into a format for publishing on the internet. Most of what Dreamweaver does can be achieved for free in Windows Notepad, provided you are a gifted hand-coder! But if you are then you won't be reading this!
Dreamweaver is the industry standard software for website assembly and maintenance. If you are going to make the investment of time and money in your web skills there is no better software, especially if you hope to work commercially, however it is not the only software you will need to create great sites.
Books, books and more books, the net & coffee - Learning tips
They say you can't learn about life from books. Perhaps not, but you can learn an awful lot about web design! In parallel with any training I provide I always recommend customers invest in some good quality books specifically aimed at the software they are using. Reading about the subject AWAY from the computer is valuable - the computer can often be a distraction when studying new concepts. Conversely the internet is full of sites lovingly built to share knowledge and forums answering every question you have yet to ask! My service is to cut through much of this and summarise it for you. I've done the reading, researching and application of what you need to know and can share it with you. You'll still need plenty of coffee.
